The “Vacation-less” God

The school year has ended and we have been busy celebrating graduations.  Now we are moving on to weddings!  It seems like we have been running from one reception to another for weeks on end.  We would not miss these special events for anything but all this running is tiring us out.  But alas it is summer and we all know that means VACATION in one form or another for most of us in the next couple of months.

Vacation!  What a wonderful thing it is.  Most of us try to get away from the day-to-day.  For some of us it means one of the theme parks, or national parks, visiting far-off relatives, or sitting quietly by a lake.  It means a change of pace, different scenery, different people; a time to try to forget the world.  Vacation has become something badly needed by those of us who lead such fast paced lives.

There is one being in this world, however, who never takes a vacation.  That one being is God.  The God we worship could be called the “Vacation-less God.”  Psalm 121 states, “He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.  The Lord is your keeper.”

This means that while we are at work or at play, God, our eternal lifeguard is always on duty, watching over us, caring for us, protecting us, and loving us.

Again, from Psalm 121, “The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forever more.”

These are words of comfort and hope, no matter where the road might lead us in the summer days ahead.  We worship the “Vacation-less God,” one who never slumbers or sleeps, that we might rest and be recreated knowing that we are always in God’s loving care.

May God bless your summer R & R.

Peace,

Pastor Mark
