The Miracle of God

Another year has slipped by and as I look back over another year here at Diamond Lake I find myself in quite the reflective mood. I distinctly remember writing a pastor’s article twelve years ago this very day while serving my previous parish. It was 1999 and the hype was on as people started packing Times Square, and the newscasters were having a field day with the coming new Millennium.

What would the year 2000 bring?

What about Y2K?

Will there be multiple natural disasters?

Will we even be here?

It all seems oddly strange that these were our worries twelve years ago. New worries have moved in to take their place. And even though few of these things turned out to be as bad as we feared we still have not stopped worrying about tomorrow - that will never change. Yet there is one thing that I do know for sure about tomorrow. It is in God’s hands and so are you and I.

That is the miracle of God and God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Tomorrow may bring no electricity, no running water, no TV (remember the Y2K fears). But God will be with us and see us through.

Computers may shut down and leave us in the cold, but the warmth of God’s love for us is always with us.

We may be the victims of a natural disaster, but God will give us the strength and courage to do what must be done.

We might not be here tomorrow. Just maybe January 2012 will be the end of the world as we know it, but if so, we will be ushered into the splendor of God’s Kingdom.

The miracle of God is not what happens tomorrow, the next day, the next week, or the next year. The miracle of God is what is happening now, today in the present, the love of God for us that knows no bounds. The miracle of God is His presence with us in the now and in the future.

God is here today to give you faith, power, courage, and strength to live out your life of faith in this time, in the new year . . . in the new age to come. The miracle of God’s love and faithfulness for each of us is in all places, circumstances, and time.

May yours be a most blessed New Year, loved in the grace of our faithful, ever-present Lord and Savior.

God’s peace,

Pastor Mark
